Despite promises, farmers may never get their land back.

By Shannon at 01/30/07 04:17
Since the early '90's paramilitary forces have forced farmers off their land. An estimated 6,000 square miles have been siezed, often at gunpoint. President Uribe promised the return, but many in his govt are championing policies that will allow the elite who have ended up in control of the land to keep it. Farmers who have spoken up have been threatened and some killed or crippled.

Development in Colombia has high human cost

By Shannon at 01/27/07 16:55
Families are displaced by new projects and objections are met with kidnappings and murders. Indigenous communities insisted that the country’s constitution, rewritten in 1991, recognize their right to their historical territories. Law 70, passed in 1993, said these communities had to be consulted and give their approval prior to any new projects planned on their land. Having a law is one thing, however. Enforcing it is another. Community leaders who resist removal risk being "killed or disappeared".

Paramilitary leaders don't want to testify on TV

By Shannon at 01/27/07 02:49
Paramilitary leaders said broadcasts would put their families at risk and undermine due process. Human rights groups say the transmission would allow victims and families to better scrutinize the proceedings, but they fear that the para's could use the disagreement over broadcasts to avoid giving complete confessions.

Victims families just hope for the truth

By Shannon at 01/27/07 02:40
Teresita Gaviria cautiously hopes for answers. While police search the country for mass graves, victims are slowly coming forward. Legal experts and relatives who witnessed Mancuso's recent closed sessions say he has so far given few concrete details about murders but revealed what many have long suspected -- his contacts with politicians and the military. Gaviria lost her teenage son 9 years ago, he just disappeared shortly after passing a police roadblock.
