Muriel Mining Corp. illegally enters ancestral land

01/24/09 08:01

Wherever country you will go, there is always a problem with conflicting interests between indigenous communities and profit-oriented companies.

Same case in Colombia, where indigenous tribes constantly try to defend their land, the latest of which is the illegal entry of the transnational mining company Muriel Mining Corp.

This violates the International Labor Organization (ILO) Resolution 169, Colombian Constitution of 1991, and Colombia's Law 70 of 1993. More on this here at SocialistWorker.org

Rebel attacks town, kills 3 children

01/16/09 23:37
Three children were killed and 12 others were hurt after a Marxist rebel group made a mortar attack in one of Colombia's town.

The rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), fired some home-made missiles at a police station in Roberto Payan in the province of Narino.

The Colombian government has been encouraging FARC rebels to flee the rebel forces by giving cash rewards and amnesties. Unfortunately, a lot of them are still at large.
